Stay away from high calorie/high fat items like dips, fried appetizers, chips, cheeses and luncheon meats. Stick with raw veggies, fruit, lean meats like roast beef and chicken breast and fish based appetizers like shrimp and smoked salmon. Shrimp is high in cholesterol but is great protein and lowfat, so if it's a choice between fried wontons and shrimp, go for the shrimp. It's easy to take just one of something, try it and walk around a bit and talk to people instead of eating! It isn't necessary to have alcohol at all, but a no-cal beverage choice would be better than a sparkling fruit juice or a regular soda...

Trixie took all my ideas except....

Sugar free gum & peppermint herbal tea... Minty tastes make me not want to eat, plus hot drinks always make me feel full..

Good luck!..

If you don't want to be deprived. Do the 3 bite routine. Take three bites of whatever you want then leave the rest.

Just get one drink if you need to get one and sip it slowly. Then drink water with lemon or seltzer the rest of the time...

Oooh Zoe, the 3 bite thing killed a lot of people at Thanksgiving. They came back later and posted that didn't work at all. They had gained big time..

Maybe the 1 bite thing, but not the 3 bite thing..

Being a heavy drinker myself (trying to quit), I recommend a regular drinking glass (matching everyone elses') filled with club soda or perrier and a lime on the side, so that it looks like a vodka tonic. Then no one will bother "why aren't you drinking, what's wrong with you, you're not pregnant are you". As long as your drink looks like a "drink", no one will think any different. And, plus, you can drive your hubby or boyfriend/date home without any trouble..

Long as you don't have cholesterol probs, the shrimp or crab claws is a great choice (you can go back at least 10 times (1 shrimp each time), to make it look like you are really eating/enjoying. Just be really careful about the sauce. Slight dab..

And the fruit tray. But no more than a couple cubes at a time, so you can keep going back and making it appear that you are really enjoying yourself. But between you and the plate, it's really just 1-2 cube per visit...

I've been using the "3 bite rule" for 27 months, and it has never failed me. Of course I stop after 3 bites. My thought is that the rule didn't fail the people, the people failed the rule.....

I was only relaying what I read..

I didn't do the 3 or 1 bite rule on TGD. So I have no personal experience, as I did 100% on TGD. This was based on just what I read the following week..

Only a friendly warning, that's all. :-)).

Of course you and anyone else are free to do what you want. :-)..

Rehab - I need to put you in touch with my mom. She is tiny like you, but needs to lose several (30) pounds. She's only 5 ft tall. She only needs to be 100 pounds or so..

What's your secret?..

I wasn't shooting the messenger...just an observation. Just like NS, you have to work it, for it to work. Saying you're going to use the 3 bite rule, doesn't make you do it...LoL!..

No secret...5 months on NS to get to my goal weight, and now 21 months of maintenance. It's never ending, but worth it. Unfortunately when you're short AND small framed, every pound shows....

Oh, almost forgot...I (circuit) weight train 2-3x/wk, too...

I agree. The 3-bite rule works fine as long as you aren't having three bites of 25 foods, and 3-bites of not one, but every dessert on the table. I suspect that's what people didn't get, and how they got into trouble. Further, "3-bites" equates to about a quarter cup of potatoes and other typical side-dishes. If you don't look at an actual quarter cup measure and recognize how small that is, you will get into trouble - in other words, we aren't talking three heaping forkfuls. This follows what the dieticians were recommending for a Thanksgiving dinner (from a traditional T-Day menu) that would wind up totalling 800+ calories as a special one-time event.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you have to eat 3500 excess calories to gain a pound of fat. That's hard to do in a single day unless you have let go of all intent to stay on plan and truly pigged out - but water retention from eating more carbs than usual is a whole 'nother story. And that is quickly lost if you get right back on plan...

In the new NS Advanced literature there are several suggestions like:.

*eat on program 2-3 hours before the event.

*enjoy your surroundings.

*put your fork down between bites.

*take small bites and chew, chew, chew.

That's just a few...and hopefully PamSB will respond...

Have a great time..
