Hello, I am new to Medifast. I am on day 6. So far I haven't had a problem with the 5 & 1 (diabetic) plan. That was until last night when my blood sugar dropped too low at 2:30 AM. What can I eat/do to get my blood sugar back up to normal ranges and still stay on my plan? In the past when I have had low blood sugars I usually drink a glass of milk or eat a banana or something to get it back up to normal ranges..

Hi Jeannie: I had that problem in the beginning as well. I only tood about 4 days for Medifast to stabilize my totally out of control blood sugar. Medifast in conjunction with my meds caused my BS to dip dangerously low. You MUST contact your doctor. Let the doctor know you are on MF. The doctor may want to adjust your meds.

Whatever is right for you in that diabetic state is what you need to do. That is first and foremost!..

You might want to modify - you can have a healthy snack (pg 14 of the medifast for diabetics program manual) and it is still ok... pudding made with fat free milk at night does the trick for me - but I only had it happen a few times....

You can also do the 4 & 2 & 1 plan or the 5-2-2 plan... the weighloss is slower - but it is better than having the highs and lows... bring the book into the doc if need be..

Just remeber those nightly blood sugars and anything beyond 4 hours after your last meal are a measure of your liver's function and have nothing to do with your last meal that you ate. But if your taking meds then yes that could really get affected at night...

I was doing pretty good with my blood sugars after my doctor dropped some of my meds, until just after lunch today (an hour and a half after my lean & green).... another low. Looks like I need to give my doctor a call and have her re-adjust my meds. I may not be dropping the weight off like some people do, but I am definitely dropping the meds like crazy. That's good enough for me...

One other thing is to have your bar last... helps keep the glucose levels through the night..

The first couple of weeks you will see fluctuations as your body adjust to the changes. Some diabetics experience drops... others see their numbers go high. They typically level out at 2 weeks and thats usually when Dr.s lower the meds as the program kicks in and the diabetes is managed nutritionally (as it should be)...

OK, I just got alarmed. This is really a question for NS, but don't want to wait forever for them to answer. I've been OP 100%, eating all my meals, Lean & Green, etc. Today is day seven for me. I got in the shower and felt very weak and shaky. Got out and started feeling a bit sweaty.

So I ate one of my Medifast bars. It did help a bit, but I was still feeling a bit weak. I used one of the Ketostix to check my ketone level, and it was purple, which is not the optimal place. We only want to be in a MILD state of ketosis. Feeling scared, I looked around my kitchen for something sweet, but I've emptied the house of almost everything.

Finally I found a 100 Calorie Pack with 18 carbs and 7 sugars. I ate this and now feel better. I know it's off plan, but I was really alarmed!.

Here's the thing....I've never been diagnosed as being diabetic, but maybe I am? I have gotten low blood sugar before when I haven't eaten for a while, but in the past I've just eaten and it's gone away.

I will go to the doctor if I have to, but in the meantime, what kind of things are good to eat and/or drink while staying on plan if this happens again?..

Okay, I just googled a few things, and it sounds like hypoglycemia, which is when your blood sugar goes low. I guess diabetes is when your body produces too MUCH sugar due to a lack of insulin. Still, I would love some feedback from anyone out there. The subject of diabetes has always confused me; I can never understand why, if a diabetic has to avoid sugars, they must always have a piece of candy or something in case their sugar goes too low? How does their sugar get too low if their body produces too much?..

Actually, the definition of diabetes from the American Diabetes Association is a bit different..

Here is an except:.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles..


So to summarize your body is going to produce sugar from the food you eat. The problem with diabetics is one of two conditions:.

1. The pancreas does not produce enough insulin to convert the sugars to energy, leaving too much sugar (glucose) in blood stream. This is generally referred to as type 1 diabetes. It normally occurs in childhood or early adulthood..

2. The pancreas does produce enough insulin to convert the sugars into energy, but your body does not use the insulin properly. Leaving a diabetic with the same result, too much sugar (glucose) in the blood stream. This is called type 2 diabetes and you will hear the term insulin resistant. People who are not overweight can also develop type 2 diabetes, but this is where most of the time environmental factors play a part.

So where your blood sugar levels (technically called blood glucose level) drop too low, there is not enough sugar to convert to energy. Low blood sugar levels are just as dangerous as high blood sugar levels (the symptoms are very similar). Therefore, to raise your blood sugar (glucose) level you would need something which the insulin can convert to glucose. Hence, many diabetics carry glucose tablets in the event of seriously low blood sugar levels. Some will also eat something (like fruit or candy) with a lot of sugar to raise the level. Also, remember that sugar is not necessarily simple table sugar, but much of what we eat can contain simple or complex "sugars.".

As someone who has been diabetic for 10+ years I can state that sometimes how you feel does not necessarily correlate to your actual blood sugar level. The only way to tell if you have either low or high blood sugars is through the use of a monitor, or what is commonly referred to as an A1C test. The A1C test measures your glucose levels over a 3 month period and it probably the tool most doctors use to monitor diabetes. I have had both dangerously high and low blood sugar. Sometimes, I can tell by the symptoms, but a lot of the time I cannot tell. I carry a monitor with me all the time.

Other times no symptoms and it was way out of whack. You should see your physician, who is really the only one who can tell you what is going on with your body..

I'm hypoglycemic and I've been on Medifast for a week now. I have had some chills and light headaches, not like too low blood sugar headaches though. With the meals so frequently and balanced, I believe that is was is keeping my blood sugar in balance. I don't monitor, I just go by how I feel. Some other diets throw me way out of whack.

Looking back, I could have had that episode because I only got 3-1/2 hours of sleep the night before and wasn't hungry when I awoke, so I waited a few hours before I ate anything. I feel okay today. I looked up the symptoms of diabetes, and I don't seem to have any (except for the episode yesterday). Hopefully all will remain well. Thanks for all the good info...

Why are you checking into blood sugar issues? Are you having some problems your trying to identify?.

I was identified with low blood sugar years ago by having a 4 or 6 hr glucose tolerance test done at a lab. The test has been repeated every few years and the testing process itself has changed too over the years.

If you are concerned I would discuss this with your doctor.

JUst an FYI if you are on 5 & 1 the healthy snack isnt an option. Page 14 is a can still have the optional celery etc. I noticed that in one spot of the manual it said one thing and in another it was different and asked Nutrisystem they said misprint..

I see that you talked to your doc and got the meds cut. WOOOO HOOOOOOO how cool is that!! I do agree with everyone else....if you are seriously whatever you need to do to gethat give you get it back........they make glucose tablets and gel packs that you can use. Don't worry bout can always get back into it, feeling carpy for a day or two is a lot better than passing out and ending up in the hospital or worse...

What bill said is on the money. us diabetics don't make too much sugar we just don't process it well enough. What you are describing is hypoglycemia. (sp) low blood sugar. You best bet is to talk to your doctor by all means. It's nothing to fool around with...

Mike is right on the money - it's nothing to fool around with. From what I understand both can affect eye sight changes, circulation, etc. So it's a really good idea to know what you are dealing with.

With low blood sugar, sweets can make your blood sugar spike very rapidly (so your on a high) and drop just as rapidly (crash). Too the point of passing out. We have a hard time keeping our blood sugar up to a normal level and there a many factors that affect that: food, stress, exercise, etc. This is not a medical description - that's best left to the pros...

First off I am not Diabetic or Hypoglysemic (sp?) but I will say that if you skip meals or wait to eat in the morning you can get symptoms that are like the milder symptoms of a diabetic or hypoglysemic. we are living on a very balanced very low calorie plan.. each meal gives us enough energy to get through about 3 waking hours. we should have our least meal a little bit before bedtime.. and our first meal very shortly after waking.. because at that point we have gone more than 8 hours between meals.

When in ketosis even a mild state you can't use hunger as your measurement because you just won't feel it. so wake up do your first morning activities (weight,bathroom ect.) then have a medifast.. hungry or not. that will help prevent you from getting thoughs weak lightheaded feelings..

Now if you are eating your meals 100% OP inclucing spacing them out correctly. and you still are getting those lightheaded feelings .. then see you doctor.. it may be that you have a problem that you didn't notice before because of the way you were eating before MF.

Thats the reason I am here. Was diagnosed with diabetes and put on metformin. Used that as an excuse to eat what I wanted and keep the bs somewhat under control. Then I went back in to get blood work done and a couple days later the doc calls and says come

I went in and he said I have a choice. Lose weight and get your diabetes under control or lose your feet, your eyesight, kidneys and your choice. Soooo uhhhhhh I'm here.......gonna lose the weight.....I'm rather attached to my feet and eyes etc.......

Amen again! I too was warned of the eyesight, feet, etc. My own father lost most of his eyesight, had several diabetic strokes, had terrible nerve damage in his feet, and ultimately died from complications of diabetes. I had the neuropathy in my feet, poor blurry vision and that is when I took charge. I did not want to end up another statistic when it is totally controllable! I do not have blurry vision or nerve pain in my feet any longer and I have not had to take diabetes meds for over a month now!.

I implore all diabetics to see your doctor regularly, monitor daily, and make sure that if you are on meds, your doctor is adjusting the dose accordingly, along with your MF! Very important!..

I have to agree. If you can save out a bit of protein for just before bed like a snack cheese, it helps to get the sugars more stable thru the nite..

I just lost my father who was diabetic. I had not seen him for several years but recently stopped by the house. He had lost part of a foot, says my DH. I was not home. He was found in his apt and had been there for a few weeks. The doc said it could have been the heart complications from diabetes, the renal deficiency and from my own research just miscalculating the insulin.

Does that stuff scare us? You bet. Medifast has been the only thing that has helped me. The ADA diet did not. Go figure. So let's stick with it and go to the doc regularly to make sure we are ok while on this path...

Wow, speaking of it made it so! I am in the throws of low BS right now. Came on quick but my BS is 82 so it must have dropped quick. I just finished my Medifast meal less than 1 hr ago. I think I better get into the doc myself. I think another med adjustment is coming!!!..
